Broadway Bike Lane Construction

Picture
This high-comfort bikeway will provide a significant new north-south connection in Denver’s growing bike network. It will enhance access to local businesses, neighborhoods and other destinations, as well as improve safety for all travelers with upgraded pedestrian crossings, streetscaping, street trees, public art and more, including:
  • New two-way protected bikeway on Broadway will use concrete curbs and a row of parking to separate people on bikes from people in cars and will connect the Cherry Creek Trail to Center Avenue and RTD’s Broadway station.
  • Curb ramp and sidewalk reconstruction will be made at intersections and other locations along the corridor to provide additional safety and comfort for people walking along Broadway.
  • Streetscaping will be enhanced by improving the landscape areas and growing conditions for street trees.
  • Multimodal improvements will provide better access to bus stops, shorter intersection crossings and improved accessibility for walkers and wheelers alike.
  • Wayfinding signage will be provided to help guide people to multimodal connections along the corridor.
  • Public art locations have been identified for areas along the corridor to complement Broadway’s unique character.
  • Infrastructure improvements such us reconstructed traffic signals and upgraded drainage.

Mississippi Ave Safety Improvements: Feedback for 60% Design

In August 2022, the Mississippi Avenue Vision Zero Safety project team shared initial design plans to help reduce speeds, shorten pedestrian crossings, add ADA compliant curb ramps, and eliminate dangerous left-turn movements, along Mississippi Avenue between Eliot and Quivas Streets. From feedback collected, the project team heard how important improved sidewalk conditions are to the community, and will continue to advocate and coordinate with other City led transportation planning efforts on how to best incorporate pedestrian connectivity network improvements into future projects.

Visit the website to review the 60% designs
, and submit any questions or comments by December 11.

Redistricting - Final Maps

On March 29, City Council officially adopted its new council district boundaries, which will be in effect for ten years, starting with the April 2023 municipal election. Because Denver’s population has changed, most council districts needed to shift east to absorb the growing population in the northeast. Some changes to District 7:

We are sad to lose two of our neighborhoods, Valverde and College View. In conjunction with the West Area Plan, Valverde will move to District 3, represented by Councilwoman Jamie Torres. College View will join Loretto Heights in District 2, represented by Kevin Flynn.
District 7 will pick up Rosedale (that has historically been part of District 7), Alamo Placita and part of Capitol Hill.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this process from your emails, phone calls, and presence at community meetings. For more information, visit denvergov.org/redistricting.

Expanded Waste Service Starting in 2023

Picture
Beginning in 2023, Denver will expand residential recycling and compost collection services to reduce the amount of trash Denver sends to the landfill and the production of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Waste in the landfill decomposes and generates methane — a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. DOTI will begin directly billing customers for residential waste services based on trash cart size. They will reach out to households later this year to select their preferred bin size. The smaller the trash cart, the lower the fee. Weekly recycling and weekly composting services are included at no extra charge. This applies to Denver Solid Waste Management customers (single family homes and apartments up to 7 units).

Denver will also offer an instant rebate program for low-income residents who may be disproportionately burdened by a fee; the rebate could cover up to 100% of the new fee. The expanded collections ordinance also ends the practice of having the general fund subsidize trash collection services for only some Denver residents, directly charging residents who receive the services. Learn more at denvergov.org/expandedcollection

West Area Plan

The draft provides a long-term vision to guide city decision making for the Barnum, Barnum West, Sun Valley, Valverde, Villa Park and West Colfax neighborhoods over the next 20 years. Thank you to the many West Denver residents who joined the community workshop last month to learn about the draft West Area Plan. Those who attended the event shared their thoughts on the long-term vision that the draft plan provides for West Area neighborhoods. City planners presented an overview of how the plan has been updated over the last few months through the work of staff and steering committee members. Participants reviewed materials from the plan and offered feedback.

If you weren't able to attend the workshop or have not commented on the plan online, there is still time and multiple ways to tell us what you think. We encourage everyone to submit their comments on the plan by December 16 so that staff can begin to review and analyze community feedback. Opportunities to talk to staff one-on-one or in a small group setting at community office hours will continue until December 13. Visit DenverGov.org/westplan for details.

RNO Renewal and Scam Warning

West Area Plan logo
The annual renewal period for Registered Neighborhood Organizations begins December 1 through January 31 at DenverGov.org/RNO. RNOs will be asked to update their contact, leadership and election information and affirm that the group continues to meet the city’s eligibility requirements:
  • Holding least one meeting per year at which members vote
  • Having at least 12 members present at one meeting
  • Posting notice of meetings in advance via methods of communication that are available to the general public
There is a scam going around requesting fees for RNO registration. Registering with the City as an RNO does NOT involve payment. An organization called “Colorado Compliance Services” has been fraudulently sending out solicitations to non-profit organizations and small businesses for payments on behalf of the state. Do not submit a payment before verifying with legitimate sources.

Snow Shoveling Tips

Ruby Hill Improvements
It is everyone’s responsibility and the law to keep sidewalks adjacent to your home or business clear and accessible. Shovel all sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, and bus stops around your home as soon as it's practical and safe. Businesses have 4 hours after the snow stops to shovel, and residents have 24 hours. Learn more at www.denvergov.org/Snow.

Show kindness and offer to help your neighbors if they aren't able to shovel! Neighbors helping neighbors is one of the things that makes Denver great.
  • Use the shovel to push the snow; don't lift it.
  • Shovel early! When snow isn't shoveled, it gets packed down and becomes ice. Shoveling all the way to the pavement will also prevent ice from forming.
  • Shovel into your yard and not into roadways and bike lanes.
  • Salt can be damaging when it runs off into your lawn or the storm sewer with the snowmelt. Look for ecofriendly and pet-safe deicers.
  • Be proactive and come up with a plan for addressing sidewalks now, before it’s snowing.
