Mayor Hancock Statement on Executive Orders Regarding Immigration

1/26/2017

Image of Mayor Michael Hancock
DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock released the following statement regarding the Executive Orders on Immigration signed today by the President:

“Denver, and cities across the country, have continually looked to and asked for Washington to act on comprehensive immigration reform. Unfortunately, that’s not what we saw today. Instead, communities and families will now be penalized for the Federal Government’s failure to act. The Executive Orders signed today put our economic security as a nation at risk, and I am deeply disappointed.

“We are a proud nation of immigrants and Denver’s number one priority is the safety, health and wellbeing of everyone who lives in our city. That is why we will not support taking unlawful or unconstitutional actions on behalf of our federal law enforcement, while continuing to comply with federal immigration laws.

“We have a history of being a city of opportunity for everyone, and we have every intention to maintain our character. This is about what is best for the residents of Denver, and I will remain steadfast in doing everything I can to protect our people – immigrants or not – and protect their rights.”

Imagining Tomorrow's Museum

1/23/2017

Imagining Tomorrow’s Museum The Denver metro area is one of the most dynamic places in the country in which to live these days, and our diverse communities have much to offer to make Colorado a vibrant place to work and play. In the past, museums tended to develop experiences they thought should interest the public. However, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is actively reaching out to hear from people from all walks of life through conversations and collaborations. The Museum is committed to listening and envisioning how to become most relevant in today’s Colorado. We intend to collaborate on a shared vision for how to create new content, strengthen what is working, engage new audiences, serve our community’s needs, and develop sustainable revenue sources. To do so, we need your help. The Museum will be holding a Summit and you’re invited! Date: February 11th, 2017 Time: 8:30am – 4:00pm Location: VIP Room For information and to RSVP for this event email us at communitycollaboration@dmns.org We look forward to re-imagining the Museum by bringing in new perspectives and voices that will provide fresh possibilities for the future. Denver Offers Homeless a Fresh Start in the New Year

1/20/2017

Outreach Court gives people an easier way to access the legal system

DENVER — The City and County of Denver has a new program to help people experiencing homelessness gain better access to the county court system and avoid deeper involvement with the criminal justice system.
Picture
Denver Outreach Court is designed to increase stabilization and reduce future interactions with the justice system for individuals experiencing homelessness or receiving homeless or transitional services. The court helps individuals take action on municipal level citations or warrants and provides direct access to mental health services and enrollment in Medicaid. Community service options are also available to complete court requirements. Instead of requiring people to come to a courthouse, which for those experiencing homelessness can often be difficult, the Outreach Court is held every other Wednesday at Denver Rescue Mission.

Denver Sheriff Department Advisory Board Request for Applications

1/18/2017

The Denver Sheriff Department (DSD) is the largest sheriff’s office in Colorado with some 900 uniformed and non-uniformed staff members. Recognizing need to improve the DSD, Sheriff Patrick Firman was appointed by Mayor Michael B. Hancock in 2015 after a nation-wide search. With more than 25 years of jail management experience, Sheriff Firman brings leadership to  the DSD and to its reform efforts. To aid the DSD moving forward, a new Sheriff Advisory Board will be established. Ruby Hill Rail Yard Now Open

1/12/2017

Winter Park Resort and Denver Parks & Recreation Team Up to Provide
Free Skiing and Snowboarding at Urban Terrain Park

DENVER, Jan. 12, 2017 – Marking the start of its eleventh year, the Ruby Hill Rail Yard is now officially open for the 2017 Season. The rail yard is available to both snowboarders and skiers and is absolutely free. The Ruby Hill Rail Yard features eight to ten rails and boxes of varying configurations and skill level.  Weather permitting, the rail yard will be open until the end of February.

The recent cold weather delivered the perfect mix of conditions to start preparing the Ruby Hill Rail Yard for the 2017 season.  Volunteers from Denver Parks and Winter Park Resort began making snow on December 28, bringing the excitement and energy of skiing and snowboarding to Denver with a free urban terrain park.

“The Ruby Hill Rail Yard would not be possible without the support we receive from our partners at Winter Park Resort,” said Happy Haynes, Executive Director of Denver Parks and Recreation.  “This is a very unique and creative program that gives our residents and visitors, especially kids, an opportunity to enjoy skiing and snowboarding at an urban terrain park in their back yard.”

The Ruby Hill Rail Yard was created in 2007 in a joint effort between Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park Resort to offer a winter sport experience in an urban setting.  Winter Park provides the rails, terrain park design and staff; and Denver Parks and Recreation provides the location and related youth programs. More than 30 volunteers work tirelessly each season to help make the rail yard possible.

Ruby Hill Park is located off of South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue. The park is open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.  The Ruby Hill Rail Yard is lighted every day from dusk until 9 p.m.

DENVER DIGS TREES APPLICATIONS DUE FEB. 15

1/9/2017

Despite Old Man Winter’s recent visit to Denver, now is the time to plan for spring gardening, and The Park People has the perfect solution for homeowners in need of affordable trees. Applications for the nonprofit’s Denver Digs Trees program, which provides Denver residents with low-cost or free trees, are available now. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, and trees will be distributed on April 15.

Street trees (planted in the public right-of-way) are all free. Yard trees (planted on private property) also are offered at a highly discounted price of $10 in targeted low tree-canopy neighborhoods, and $35 in all other Denver neighborhoods. This is a great deal, as these trees would typically retail for $100-125. People experiencing financial hardship may request a treeship to receive their yard trees at no cost. Visit TheParkPeople.org to apply, or call 303-722-6262 to request an application.
