In recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Denver Human Services (DHS), Denver’s Road Home and community partners are spotlighting all the ways to give to those less fortunate this holiday season.
“Denver is a compassionate and generous community and we want to encourage people to donate not just during the holidays, but year-round,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. “The gift of time, money or items in need may cost a donor very little but the impact of that gift can be priceless for those struggling to afford their basic needs.”
Denver’s Donation Guide highlights all the ways to give by volunteering your time or donating goods, food, clothing or dollars to area service providers. The quick reference guide outlines partners throughout Denver who serve people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their housing. Some of the most needed items this winter include: jeans and warm pants, all-weather boots, gloves, hats, scarves, and hand-warmers.
Hats, scarves, gloves and mittens can also be donated to Giving Tree sites at the seven regional recreation centers, the atrium of the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, and Denver Police Department headquarters as well as the annual Light the Lights event at Civic Center Park.
For those wishing to get in the giving spirit earlier, on Monday, November 20, city officials including DHS Executive Director Don Mares will join Mayor Hancock in supporting Denver Rescue Mission’s Thanksgiving Turkey Drive.
Donors can also connect with a family, teen or senior served by DHS programs through the annual GIVE Denver Adopt-A-Family, Teen or Senior Holiday Gift Drive. There are three easy ways to donate to the drive:
1. Adopt a family, teen or senior: Team up or register as an individual atdenvergov.org/GIVE to “adopt,” or sponsor, a Denver family, teen, or senior. You’ll receive an individualized shopping list to use when shopping especially for your recipient. Register to sponsor by December 1.
2. Donate holiday gifts: Drop off a holiday gift at one of the designated sites by December 13, 2017 and GIVE Denver will deliver it to a DHS client. For a list of commonly requested gifts, head to denvergov.org/GIVE. Designated sites include all Denver Human Services locations and the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building.
3. Make a monetary donation: Let GIVE Denver do the shopping by making a credit card donation or sending a check to GIVE Denver, 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver, CO, 80204 with “Adopt-a-Family” in the memo line. All donations are 100 percent tax deductible.

Denver Environmental Health and the Sierra Club Colorado Chapter are hosting Denver on Climate: Film, Food & Conversation on Nov. 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McNichols Building, 3rd floor (144 W Colfax Ave). The free event will include a screening of the documentary “From the Ashes,” followed by an expert panel that will discuss the local impacts of climate change and actions being taken in Denver.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide public input on the city’s 80x50 Climate Goal Stakeholder Report, and to help shape Denver’s efforts to address climate change. Based on the Stakeholder Report and public input, Denver’s 2018 Climate Action Plan will be released in early 2018.
“From the Ashes” is a compassionate documentary presenting compelling stories from coal communities, and what is at stake for our economies, public health and climate. It features the voices and perspectives of environmentalists, coal miners, climate scientists, law makers, ranchers, elected officials and residents of coal communities.

Denver Water’s Citizens Advisory Committee, the 10-member volunteer committee that facilitates public involvement for Denver Water policies and programs, is seeking a new Denver citizen representative.
The position carries a three-year term that will start in January 2018 and run through December 2020.
The CAC typically meets the third Thursday of each month, 5–7 p.m., at Denver Water, 1600 W. 12th Ave., Denver, CO 80204.

In partnership with the City and County of Denver, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District will hold an open house on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 to gather public input on preliminary alternatives currently being evaluated to restore degraded habitat along approximately 2.4 miles of the South Platte River from West Yale Avenue downstream (north) to West Mississippi Avenue in Denver. The meeting will run from 6:00 - 7:30 pm with a formal presentation starting at 6:30 pm. The time before and after the presentation will be an open house style where people will have the opportunity to speak with Corps and City officials about the project.

We’re not only attending community events all around Denver to hear from residents in person -- we’ve also deployed Denveright kiosks at several public venues across the city. These kiosks help us capture the attention of those who don’t yet know about Denveright or don’t have Internet access at home.
We’ll be rotating them around the city. From now through the winter you can find a Denveright kiosk in the following locations:
Sgt. Stephen Romero, a nearly 22-year veteran of Denver Animal Protection( DAP), will host a community meet and greet session on Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Capital One Café located next to Union Station at 1550 Wewatta St. in Denver.
The event will offer community members an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the vital services DAP officers provide to both people and animals every day. It will also give DAP officers an opportunity to better understand the community’s animal protection needs and open a helpful dialogue with residents. Anyone curious about the work DAP officers do to educate and protect people and animals, and especially those interested in pursuing a career in animal protection, are encouraged to attend.
DAP is committed to providing humane care to companion animals; reuniting lost pets with their owners; adopting pets to loving homes; enforcing Denver City and County animal ordinances; and proactively educating the public about animals, their needs and DAP’s critical role as a community resource.
In September 2017 alone, DAP officers responded to 1,734 calls in addition to providing education and materials to community members. These efforts contributed to helping vaccinate 429 animals, spaying or neutering 250 animals, microchipping 36 animals and providing foster care for 44 animals. DAP officers also helped return 36 pets to their homes and families, ensuring these animals never needed to enter the shelter’s care.

Starting today, planners will host five Blueprint Denver workshops where residents can review and provide input on draft maps and potential future growth strategies. Discussion will cover creating new transit corridors, employment and residential hubs, and ensuring all residents have access to amenities, transportation, jobs, trail connections and quality open space. Residents will help identify ways of managing our population growth that are inclusive, equitable and honor the things we love most about our city.

More than 150 people have signed up to speak before Denver City Council as the result of a monthly General Public Comment Session established last May. Because of the successful participation, Council members have added a second session each month.
Starting Sept. 18, public comment sessions will be held the first and third Mondays of each month. If there is no meeting on the first or third Monday, the session will be cancelled. The General Public Comment Session allows participants to address the Council on a topic not appearing on the agenda or scheduled for a public hearing.

That’s because “Go-Tober” is a month away! The DRCOG program encourages people to commute smarter year-round and find ways to travel to work other than driving alone. Last year, City employees who took the “Go-Tober” challenge saved an average of $45 and logged enough trips to get from Downtown Denver to Frisco almost 900 times! Project Homeless Connect is a free resource fair for homeless and at-risk individuals and families. During this one day event, on Tuesday, September 19, clients are able to access an array of services ranging from ID services, housing services, resume workshops, clothing banks, vision check and healthcare to veterans services, childcare, petcare and much more. They are expecting to see 1,000 clients at this year’s event and need nearly as many volunteers to make the day a success.

New community input opportunity: The Denver Moves: Transit team has started to identify, evaluate, and prioritize where major transit capital investments (e.g., rail, bus rapid transit, new transfer facilities, etc.) could be in Denver. We need your input to help inform the final recommendations. Please share with your community the new online survey to tell us where they would like to see major transit investments and services in Denver. The transit plan team will also be back out in the community in August and September offering a number of in-person opportunities to provide input about transit corridors – information about where we’ll be is here and on the Denveright calendar.

We are quickly approaching the end of July, which means our school supply drive is coming to a close. As a reminder, donor drop-off hours for the GIVE Center begin this Friday, July 28 until Saturday, August 12. Please note the highlighted changes in the schedule below.
There will be 2 parking spots reserved for “GIVE Denver Donors,” behind the statue in the parking lot (see image below; look for the GIVE logo signs). If you are unable to drop off during the times listed, please contact me to schedule a time when staff are available to assist you.
For those who registered to “adopt” a student:
When delivering the school supplies to GIVE Denver, please mark the backpack with the student’s first name and case worker name. Call or email me if you would like me to resend your assigned child’s information.
Please note: If you have selected to give your donation directly to the child, it is your responsibility to contact the child’s guardian in order to make arrangements to meet in-person. GIVE Denver will do everything we can to pair a donor who wishes to meet their recipients with recipients who are able to meet their donors. It is not guaranteed that you will be paired with someone who can meet their donor or that your recipient will respond to your calls or emails. If you cannot meet your recipient one-on-one, please know that staff at DHS will ensure your donation goes to the intended recipient for you.

Applications are now being accepted to fill one vacancy on the Denver County Cultural Council.
The cultural council is a board authorized by the State of Colorado, appointed by Denver City Council and managed by Denver Arts & Venues to distribute Scientific & Cultural Facilities District Tier III revenues to science and cultural organizations in Denver.

City Council is seeking applicants with active community involvement at the neighborhood level and professional, volunteer or advocatory experience in an art, cultural, scientific or historical organization. Applicants should have a citywide perspective and be willing to commit at least 15 to 20 hours per month to the cultural council during the annual grant application review period, from March through June.
Applications are due by Monday, August 14.
The Denver County Cultural Council is comprised of 11 voting members. Three are ex-officio, representing citywide organizations, and eight are community representatives selected from interested applicants. The vacancy is for a 2-, 3-, or 4-year term, renewable for an additional term, up to a maximum of six years.
