The Denver Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs invites you to join us in celebrating Welcoming Week. Denver, along with Welcoming America, other partnering cities and nonprofit organizations around the nation work to build a welcoming and sustainable community for all our residents. Welcoming Week, September 14-23, is a national celebration with a series of events bringing together immigrants, refugees, and U.S.-born residents to share the benefits of and create a community – a City – where EVERYONE is valued and welcome. 

This year, the Denver Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs is pleased to host:

The Newcomers: A reading w/Helen Thorpe and Panel Discussion
Tuesday, Sept 18, at 6:00 pm
Helen Thorpe, award winning journalist and author of Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America, Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War, will read from her book, 'The Newcomers: Finding Refuge, Friendship, and Hope in an American Classroom'. The Newcomers follows the lives of twenty-two immigrant teenagers in an English Language Acquisition class at South High School.
A panel discussion with immigrant and refugee students will follow.
Paperback books will be on sale.

Join us at the Webb Building at 5:30 pm, for a Banner Reveal as the City & County of Denver reveals a new welcoming banner. Special thanks to OneColorado and ProgressNow. Then, walk on over to McNichols to view the Our Immigrant Stories Exhibit and enjoy the reception.

The Denver Housing Authority and theDenver Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs, present an exhibit celebrating the diversity, strength, and determination of Denver residents. DHA's PhotoVoice Project combines photography, dialogue, photo exhibits and social action to increase awareness and appreciation of different cultures. Other works by young people that participate in ArtStreet depict each artists view of immigration.
Exhibit opens Monday, September 17 on the first floor of the McNichols Civic Center Building.

Thursday, September 6
  • 5:00 pm Del Sur al Norte: The Mexican Cultural Center
The Mexican Cultural Center and Manuel Cordero invite you to the Opening Reception for the Exhibit "Del Sur al Norte", a collection of art pieces. Exhibit Runs from September 6 - December 14, 2018 - open Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • 5:00 pm Denverites for Dreamers Fundraiser at Cervecería Colorado: Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC)
Join CIRC and Cervecería Colorado for a night for fine beer, delicious food, and real stories from real Colorado Dreamers, who may be in danger of deportation.

  • 9:00 am Colorado Climate, Jobs and Justice Summit: Colorado People’s Alliance
Rise for climate justice and join the national mobilization to demand a clean and renewable energy future that protects communities most impacted by climate change and pollution – work to lift up the voices of workers and communities of color.
  • 10:00 am 29th Annual Denver Art Museum Friendship Powwow: Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum’s Friendship Powwow is a celebration of the vitality of American Indian cultures. One of the DAM’s longest-running events, the 29th Annual Friendship Powwow and American Indian Cultural Celebration will feature American Indian dancers, drum groups, hands-on activities, booths hosted by artists and community groups, and more. Everyone is welcome and general admission is free.

Sunday, September 9
  • 11:00 am Fiestas Patrias 2018: La Suavecita 92.1 & Mi Casa Resource Center
Fiestas Patrias is a joint Mexican Independence celebration with Entravision and Mi Casa Resource Center held annually at Denver Civic Center Park. Enjoy music, food and so much more. Mi Casa benefits by receiving 50% of all beverage revenue from the event.

Tuesday, September 11
  • 8:30 am 4th Annual Spring Intercultural Champion Awards: Spring Institute
Spring Institute invites you to celebrate the rich cultural, social and economic contributions that immigrants and refugees bring to Colorado.
  • 6:45 pm GoodCinema Presents: Immigrant Detention Short Films: GoodCinema & Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition
This GoodCinema event, the second of our three-part film series on social justice, explores an issue that has garnered widespread attention under Trump’s zero-tolerance, immigrant detention policy at the border. We will screen four short films, Immigrants for Sale, Immigrant Prisons, Deportation Nation, and locally produced Beyond the Wall. This will be followed by an audience discussion led by a panel of experts to be announced soon.

Thursday, September 13
  • 6:00 pm El Infinito: Museo de las Americas
In collaboration with Lockheed Martin and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, this exhibit will feature images captured by satellites that will highlight the human connection to the universe through the power of color and its interpretation. Images of the universe will also have a cultural tie-in with the prophecies of the Aztecs and the way the ancient civilization interpreted the universe as represented through a selection of prints from the Codex Borgia (the Aztec manuscript written before the Spanish conquest of Mexico). Exhibit: September 13, 2018 – February 23, 2019

  • 11:30 am China in the World Economy: An Opportunity for Cooperation: World Denver
Join us for lunch with David Firestein, the founding Executive Director of the China Public Policy Center and former American diplomat. We will discuss the current state of U.S.-China relations with a special emphasis on China's profound effect on the world economy and America's response to it.
  • 12:00 pm DU Crimmigration Law & Policy - From Family Detention to Family Separation and Back: University of Denver
Join Efrén C. Olivares, Director of Racial and Economic Justice at Texas Civil Rights Project; Carlos M. García, Partner, García & García Attorneys at Law; and Anita Maddali, Associate Professor, Northern Illinois University College of Law to discuss family separation and detention at the border. Moderated and hosted by Professor César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, University of Denver Sturm College of Law.  Room 165, 12:00 pm.

  • 5:00 pm 27th Annual Civil Rights Awards: NEWSED Community Development Corporation
  • 5:30 pm CRC and CRSB Launch Party!: International Rescue Committee Denver
Come out and celebrate the launch of both Colorado Refugee Connect and the Colorado Refugee Speakers Bureau! At the event, guests will learn about the new CRC site which will serve as a one-stop-shop for individuals looking to volunteer with one of the 30 plus refugee-serving agencies in Colorado. You will then be able to hear from our community members who have been crafting stories of their personal experiences in coming to America as a refugee! This is an event that you do not want to miss!
  • 7:00 pm Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas: Mexican Cultural Center
The Mexican Cultural Center, along with the Colorado Symphony, presents Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas. In its second year, this unique community concert celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin culture’s influence on sound in the Americas. This concert will showcase a fusion of traditional, classical, and contemporary music augmented by the Colorado Symphony’s soaring orchestrations. This event is a FREE community concert. Admission is free, but tickets are required for entry. Tickets for this performance are available two weeks prior to the event at the Colorado Symphony Box Office.   • Director for a Day: City & County of Denver, Department of Public Safety
Recognizing public safety is ensured via community and Department of Safety partnership and collaboration, Director for a Day is an opportunity for community learns to learn more about Denver’s Department of Safety and meet with Executive Director of Safety Troy Riggs and Chief of Police Paul Pazen among others.   • 9:00 am Cabinet in the Community: City & County of Denver, Neighborhood Relations
Please join Mayor Michael B. Hancock, his Cabinet and department heads as they come together for their quarterly neighborhood Cabinet meeting. Hear a first-hand account of what is happening in your community and around the city. Following the meeting, all attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage in a one-on-one dialogue with the Mayor and his leadership team.
  • 2:00 pm Citizenship Workshop – Taller de Ciudadanía: Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC)

  • 5:00 pm Unveiled & Unguarded: Conversations about Community, Culture & the Veil
Back by popular demand, Unveiled and Unguarded offers an opportunity for women of all faiths in our community to come together with our sisters to learn about the role of veiling in Islam; why some women wear the veil, and some do not. Hear stories of faith and resiliency from our community—and have the opportunity to ask candid questions and learn in a safe, feminine space over a delicious shared meal. Expect powerful conversations!!
